How wrongly can you ride this ramp?
I’d been sitting on a YouTube video for months, it was one of those I was procrastinating because it meant sifting through so much footage and I didn’t really have the vision for it. In these dull February days with not much going on with Bmx and my shoulder giving me some jiff, I felt a need to get on some content again to fill some spare time and stay active.
It ended up being a really fun video, John Saxton is a comedian in his spare time, and when he’s not ramp building (his official occupation I believe), he’s also a pickleball enthusiast, snowboarder, YMCA swimmer, podcast host, author, gun shooter, motorbike rider and (I’m probably missing some other hobbies honestly) has been riding Bmx at Woodward for over two decades. If there’s anyone that knows every nook and cranny of these ramps, it’s him. Maybe that’s why he can spin on his back between them or balance holding his tyre and landing backwards… he jokily claims it’s because “I’m not good at things, so have to do goofy stuff”, and likes to see something different. He’s not so innocent. I recall John telling me he learned these goofy tricks just so he could get riders on letters in games of BIKE! When the typical bar & whip bangers aren’t your style but you’re playing against the likes of Daniel Dhers, Dave Mirra, Jamie Bestwick, Kevin Robinson and many more, in the mid 2000’s at the height of the X-Games at Woodward Camp, well, you gotta get creative!
One of my favourite things about Bmx is the freedom to be creative, all of these tricks are made up anyway so who are we to say what equates a ‘real’ trick or not. Riding like this can get a lot of laughs and help you see things in a way you never could before, it’s so fun, and not as easy as John makes it look.
